Biopsy
Abnormal tissue and lesions are often candidates for removal and histologic examination.
Their removal can be accomplished with a laser, radiosurgical unit or scalpel. The removal can be excisonal in which the whole lesion is removed, or incisional in which a part of the lesion and normal adjacent tissue is taken.
The specimen is placed in a suitable medium for preservation and sent to a medical lab for histologic evaluation. Your medical insurance will dictate where the specimen is sent.
